Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as she sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky ground [...] and when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.

Seed of Inspiration

#MusicMonday

MATT SAYLES/INVISION/AP

Each Monday, we'll bring you some empowering music done by women to get your work week going.

This week, we're giving you the one and only, Beyonce. A feminist, a womanist, and one of the most innovative artists of our time. No treatment of modern feminist music would be complete without without including her. Many of us saw her stunningly beautiful performance at the Grammy's where she was the physical embodiment of motherhood, wearing a gold crown that echoed the crown of the Statue of Liberty pictured above. Here's another amazing performance of hers below from the 2016 BET Awards, singing "Freedom" with Kendrick Lamar from her visual album "Lemonade." In her groundbreaking and award-winning album (purchasable on iTunes), the visual component of "Freedom" opens with the mothers of Eric Garner, Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin looking on. Throughout the stunning film,  you will be amazed by her beautiful and raw statements about gender, race, class, relationships, and womanism. Enjoy!

Seed of Action

#MoralMonday

Today, we ask you to take five minutes to scatter one or more of the 8 seeds below to grow love for black lives on behalf of the mothers of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and the other African-American men and women who died at the hands of police, in police custody, or from gun violence.

  1. Inform Yourself:
    • Take one of the Harvard Implicit Association study tests. This seed does take about 10 minutes. There are many versions. You may want to take the "race" or "skin color" version. This is one way we can learn about our own biases
    • Purchase and place in your reading cue the #1 New York Times Bestseller and National Book Award Winning book, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.
    • Watch the new film I Am Not Your Negro.
